January 11th, 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Surgeon General report on smoking and health. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Service (USDHHS) celebrated the day with the release of The Health Consequences of Smoking - 50 years of Progress (Executive Summary). The report summarizes the consequences of 50 years of tobacco use in the United States and was the first comprehensive compliation of research linking smoking to adverse health events such as the lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. The report marks the steady progress achieved in reducing the prevalence of smoking and highlights effective methods of smoking prevention. Although the same conclusions and result may not be drawn for Korea, this report may provide profound insights to improve the health status of the Korean population.
